Scott Reitz, 66

Scott Reitz, 66, passed away on Monday, Jan. 28, 2013, after fighting a courageous battle with ALS.

He was born in Brookville, on July 3, 1946, a son of Ruby and Donald Reitz, and was lovingly raised by his paternal grandparents, Effie Cora and Clair Reitz.

He graduated from Punxsutawney High School in 1965 and always thought Groundhog Day should be a national holiday.

He served in the Army Reserves from 1966-72.

Completing meat-cutting school in Toledo, Ohio, he then began his career with the Golden Dawn stores.

He spent the majority of his career employed at Mr. D’s Foodfair in Brookfield.

After his diagnosis of ALS, he worked at Shenango Meat and Poultry, where co-owners Tim and Shawn treated him with respect and compassion and made his final working years a pleasure and a joy.

Scott married Linda Marie Schuckers on Sept. 4, 1971, and was a loving, devoted and adoring husband.

They had three children, who he often spoke of with great pride: a son, Timothy Scott, married to Christina Cho of Charlotte, N.C., and daughters Danielle Marie married, to husband Drew Cole of San Antonio, Texas, and Christina Lynn of Sylva, N.C.

They will fondly remember him for his sense of humor, his love of nature, his quiet spiritual contemplation and his love for spending time with them playing games, talking over coffee, going for walks and traveling.

Besides always taking the annual family vacations, he was an avid sportsman particularly devoted to hunting and fishing.

He spent many hours in nature contemplating the beauty of God’s world and enjoyed recounting stories from decades of successful hunting trips.

Scott was an active member of Hickory United Methodist Church.

In addition to his wife and children, surviving relatives include his mother; two brothers, Donald of Punxsutawney and Dennis of Myerston, Pa.; a sister-in-law, Jane Hutchinson; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents and father.

A dog, Charlie, also will miss him.

The family would like to express their gratitude to Pastor Dave Evans, neighbors and friends, who visited Scott when he was no longer mobile.

Also, special thanks to the nurses in ICU at UPMC at Greenville, Linda’s co-workers and Advanced Anesthesia Associates, who were a constant source of strength during Scott’s illness.

Scott’s laughter and love will be missed by all who knew him.
