Ruth S. Elkin, 93

Ruth S. Elkin, 93, of Dayton, Pa., went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2013, at Armstrong County Memorial Hospital.

She was born April 5, 1919, in East Mahoning Township, Indiana County, the daughter of Blair R. and Nannie L. (Lockhart) Streams.

Ruth was a resident of Dayton since 1967 and graduated from Marion Center High School in 1937.

She received her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from the Indiana State Teachers College in 1941 and began her teaching career at South Mahoning Township Schools.

Ruth married Russell T. Elkin on Aug. 23, 1944, and later taught third grade at Dayton Elementary School for 18 years before her retirement in 1981.

She held memberships with the Pennsylvania State Education Association, National Education Association and Public School Employees Retirement System of Pennsylvania.

Faith was another important part of her life, and she was a member of Gilgal Presbyterian Church in East Mahoning Township.

Ruth served as a Sunday school teacher for many years and also played the piano and organ.

She enjoyed plastic canvas needlepoint and, above all, spending time with her family.

Her dedication to helping others and her caring spirit will never be forgotten.

Left to cherish her memory are her sons, Ronald D. Elkin and wife Merry of Alto, N.M., Larry R. Elkin of Dayton, Pa., Roger H. Elkin of Dayton, Pa., and Lee R. Elkin and wife Marsha of Northpoint; granddaughters Rebecca, Rachel and Sarah Elkin; two step-grandchildren; great-grandchildren Ava and James Coombs; and a sister, Louise S. Shank of Indiana, Pa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband of 55 years, Russell T. Elkin, who passed away on Oct. 2, 1999; an infant son, Richard B. Elkin; a grandson, Daniel James Elkin; a brother, Ralph L. Streams; a sister, Evelyn S. Steele; and cousins who were raised as siblings, Leonard Streams and Helen S. Blouse.

Family and friends will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, March 3, 2013, at the Bauer-Bly Funeral Home, 125 East Main St., Dayton, Pa.

Additional visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of funeral services at 11 a.m. Monday, March 4, 2013, at Gilgal Presbyterian Church, 638 Gilgal Rd., Marion Center, Pa., with the Rev. Darla Revennaugh officiating.

Burial will be at Gilgal Presbyterian Cemetery, Marion Center.
