On Friday, Punxsutawney Mayor Richard Alexander announced that Punxsutawney Borough Police Chief James Borza has resigned, effective today.

Alexander said that he found the letter in his mailbox at the Civic Center and was surprised to hear that Borza had suddenly submitted his resignation.

He said Borza took the day off on Friday and is officially done, as of today.

Alexander noted that Borza had not even reached his first anniversary as the chief and that Borza gave specific reasons for his sudden resignation, but Alexander said those reasons are confidential at this time.

Alexander also said he could not comment on a hostile workplace environment suit that had recently been filed by a borough employee.

"I thought Borza might resign, but I never thought it would be this soon," Alexander said.

He said that the next step in the process is for the members of Punxsutawney Borough Council to begin the search for a new police chief.
