Firefighters from more than a dozen area fire companies and departments assisted the Sykesville Volunteer Fire Company in battling a stubborn four-alarm fire at an Amish furniture shop on Friday afternoon.

Kevin Yamrick, Sykesville Volunteer Fire Company chief, said the alarm was turned in at 3:41 p.m. and the fire was fully involved when firefighters arrived on scene at 3490 Desire Rd., Henderson Township.

He said that because it is such a rural area, it took quite a while before they could get enough tankers on the scene to establish enough water to fight the blaze.

"The building is a total loss, and there were no injuries," Yamrick said, adding that they went to a fourth alarm — which is very rare, even in a rural area.
