Velma Olovett Bowser, 95, of Big Run, died Monday, May 20, 2013, at home with her loving family.
Velma was born on June 18, 1917, in Ernest, a daughter of the late Alfred and Sarah (Morgan) Schierer.
On April 27, 1946, she married Glenn Clark Bowser.
She made her own wedding gown from a parachute from World War II. Her husband preceded her in death on Jan. 9, 1963.
Velma was a member of the Big Run Presbyterian Church.
Mrs. Bowser was the Big Run 2011 Citizen of Year.
She was the owner of the gas station/small store in Big Run, which she operated until the flood of 1996. Her company mascots were her wiener dogs, which were always by her side as she operated her business.
She also owned a trailer park, which was next to the gas station.
Being the ambitious woman she was, she and her brother also had a chenille business. She made the chenille vests for Ed Stoyek and his Polish/bluegrass band and many others.
Her enjoyments were her family, knitting, crocheting, sewing and playing various instruments, such as the organ, piano, banjo, spoons and the harmonica.
She enjoyed her flowers and gardening. She was an avid canner; she canned from her garden and everything the family brought her.
Surviving relatives include three children, Larry Glenn Bowser of Punxsutawney, Fred T. Bowser and wife Betsy of DuBois, and Daniel L. Bowser and wife Theresa of Punxsutawney; two of her brother's children, whom she helped raise, William Schierer and wife Rose of Indiana and Connie Williams and husband Roy of Wisconsin; seven grandchildren, Steven and Tom Bowser, Ashleigh Carlson, Clark Bowser and Matthew, Ben and Danielle Bowser; six great grandchildren, Trevor, Shayla, Joey and Jacob Bowser and Megan and Addie Carlson.
Velma was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a brother, Thomas Morgan Schierer; and a sister, Alice Wynetta McKee.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, May 23, 2013, at Brenda D. Shumaker Funeral Home, Inc., Big Run.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 24, 2013, at the funeral home, officiated by Joe Buterbaugh and VNA Hospice Chaplain Tom Spiker. Interment will follow at McClure Cemetery.
