PUNXSUTAWNEY — Punxsutawney Borough Police discovered a burglary that occurred at Lily's Restaurant in the early morning hours on Tuesday while performing security checks.
According to police, the burglary occurred sometime during the early morning hours at Lily's Restaurant along West Mahoning Street, when an unknown actor entered the building through a small window and removed money from the business.
"Two Punxsutawney Borough Police officers discovered the burglary at approximately 2:50 a.m., while conducting security checks, when they observed a small window open at the business," said Tom Fedigan, Punxsutawney Borough Police chief.
Fedigan said that upon further investigation, it was determined that someone had forcibly gained access into the building.
"Based on evidence gathered at the scene, the actor appears to have been a male wearing blue jeans, a gray hooded sweatshirt and black sneakers, with a dark-colored mask and gloves," Fedigan said, adding that the suspect apparently gained entry into the building at approximately 1 a.m.
He said every single lead in this case and some other recent break-ins is being followed.
"We know many people have information regarding these burglaries and are reluctant to come forward," Fedigan said. "It is crucial for residents to call the police department regarding any suspicious activities, such as strangers walking down the street, standing on street corners, sitting in cars or driving about the neighborhood."
Fedigan said that Punxsutawney Borough Police are being assisted by the Pennsylvania State Police in the investigation.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Punxsutawney Borough Police Department at 938-6220.
This is the second recent break-in at Lily's and one of several reported at local businesses of late.
Four local businesses — Lily's, Walker Auto Parts, Subway and ISDA — have recently been victimized, and Lillian Cameron, owner of Lily’s, said Tuesday that a "substantial reward" is being offered by business owners for any information leading to the arrest of individuals responsible.
