PUNXSUTAWNEY — Saturday, Punxsutawney Area High School's Athletic Department will host its Punxsutawney Sports Hall of Fame Banquet and Induction Ceremony at the Punxsutawney Area High School.
In anticipation of the event, The Spirit will feature the biography of one member of the Hall of Fame Class of 2013 each day.
Today's featured athlete is Gary Garzoni.
Garzoni was a two-year letter winner in high school football, playing from 1964 to 1968.
He was named to the WFBG-TV Channel 10 All-Star Team and earned honors as District IX Lineman of the Year, Associated Press Second Team All-State and UPI Third Team All-State.
He was also named his team’s Most Valuable Player.
After high school, he attended Southwestern College in Winfield, Kan., where he was a four-year starter from 1968 to 1972.
He earned the Blocker of the Week award five times and was named to the All-KCAC team twice as a center.
His other honors included making the NAIA District 10 All-Star Team and NAIA All-American Team as center and winning the Outstanding Blocker Award twice.
In high school, he also was an All-Distict IX state shot put qualifier.
In 2007, he was inducted into the Southwestern College Hall of Fame for football.
He has served as a teacher and coach at PAHS for 40 years, having coached football, wrestling and track and field.
