PUNXSUTAWNEY — The old saying goes that one life touches another, and that has proven true for a dearly departed student whose legacy continues to live on long after her passing.
In 1987, Polly Hallman was just beginning her sophomore year when she sadly passed away. Her classmates were stricken with grief, but also determined to do something in her memory.
Since Polly loved to volunteer and help out her community, her classmates decided to band together and establish a scholarship in her honor.
One of her classmates was the first to receive that scholarship in 1990, and that scholarship continues to help local graduating students.
In order to receive the scholarship, a student must have strong ties to the community and have volunteered or done some form of charitable work.
Students also must meet the academic requirements and be accepted into an accredited four-year college.
This Sunday, Polly's Annual Groundhog Shuffle will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Punxsy Elks Club on North Findley Street. Tickets will be available at the door.
The dance will be held for children in grades 4 through 7, and the proceeds will benefit the Polly Hallman Memorial Scholarship Fund.
Admission is $5 and includes 5 raffle tickets for the silent auction.
Prizes to be auctioned off include: Pittsburgh Steelers’ apparel, iTunes gift cards, groundhog souvenirs, Thirty-One lunch totes, GameStop gift cards and gift baskets.
Pizza, pop and snacks will be available for purchase, as well as extra raffle tickets, which are three for $1 or 20 for $5.
Organizers assure parents that plenty of adult chaperones will be in attendance. Making a special visit will be Punxsy Phil.
For those wishing to purchase tickets, you may call Mary Anne Neal at (814) 952-8464 or Kathi Barr at (814) 938-3334.
