Donald Edward Meneely, 88, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 24, 2012, after a very caring, very supportive and very comfortable stay in the “private” Assisted Care Home of Julia Nobia in Plano, Texas.
Don was born on March 3, 1924, in Punxsutawney, where he grew up and graduated from high school in 1941.
He proudly served in the U.S. Navy during World War II on the U.S. Navy destroyer Schbick (DD639) in the south Pacific, and he attained the rank of Ensign during the war.
After the war, Don graduated with a BA in Business Administration from University of Pittsburgh in 1949.
He had two very successful careers, one for 19 years at Martin Marietta (now Martin/Lockheed), in Baltimore, Md., then in Denver, Colo.; and the second career of more than 13 years at Fairchild Industries in Farmingdale, N.Y.
Don held high-level executive positions at both companies as vice president of finance.
He retired at the age of 58 and spent most of his “active, early retirement years” in his second love, traveling extensively throughout the U.S. in his RV with his “first love” and wife, Charlotte L. Meneely.
Don was preceded in death in 1999 by his loving wife of 56 years, Charlotte L. Meneely, who also grew up and lived in Punxsy, where the two met as childhood sweethearts, “fell in love”, and married on Sept. 18, 1943.
He was also preceded in death by his parents, John Roy Meneely and Emma A. King; his stepmother, Pearle V. Meneely; his older brother, Robert T. Meneely; his older sister, Ruth Louise Stewart; and his stepbrother, Roy F. Pentz.
Surviving relatives include three sons and their spouses, Gordon G. Meneely and wife Susie of Carrollton, Texas, Roger K. Meneely and wife Pat of Clemmons, N.C., and Douglas E. Meneely and wife Carolyn of Chicago, Ill.; a daughter, Cathy L. Allen and husband Don of Virginia Beach, Va.; a younger sister, Dorothy Smith of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; a younger brother, John Roy Meneely Jr., of Greensburg, Pa.; a second brother, Dale M. Pentz of Willow Street, Pa.; three grandsons, Richard A. Meneely, Cory A. Meneely and David E. Meneely (wife Patty); five granddaughters, Jennifer A. Meneely, Missy McLemore (spouse Randy), Sherry James (spouse Chip), Betsy Grant (spouse Steve) and Julia Meneely; and 10 great-grandchildren; Dustin White (parents Missy/Randy), Hailey James (parents Chip and Sherry), Elissa, Ryan, Justin and Dylan Meneely (parents Dave/Patty), and Cade, Jay, Ruby and Tyler Grant (parents Betsy/Steve Grant).
At Don’s request, a short graveside funeral service will be held at at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012, at Circle Hill Cemetery, where Don will forever be laid to rest, next to his “first love” and very dedicated spouse, Charlotte L. Meneely.
Also at Don’s request, in lieu of flowers, Don and the family requested that charitable donations be made to the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition (NOCC a 501(c)(3) Charitable Trust) and mailed or given to Gordon G. Meneely at 3808 Maywood Dr., Carrollton, Texas 75007.
A “matching gift” of all the families/friends' donations will be added if the checks are sent to Gordon, and a formal ceremony will be set up with NOCC at a later date to commemorate the charitable life work (mainly with the March of Dimes) and the many charitable contributions of Charlotte L. Meneely.
Pictures of this charitable ceremony at NOCC will be sent to those who make a written request.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Deeley Funeral Home, Punxsutawney.
