PUNXSUTAWNEY – With the home stretch of the season set to begin, Punxsy equaled its volleyball win total from last year with the 10th victory of the fall, 3-0, over visiting Brockway on Monday night.
The Lady Chucks (10-3) started slowly winning the first game, 25-21, put things together a bit better in the second contest, 25-18, and finished strong, 25-10, for the sweep of the Lady Rovers. The win completes the season sweep of Brockway as Punxsy won, 3-1, on Sept. 6 on the road.
"This was our tenth win of the season, which equals last year," pointed out Lady Chucks coach Heather Good. "It puts us in a great spot moving into the last leg of the season."
Senior middle hitter Sydney Weaver paced the Punxsy attack. Weaver blocked a season-high six attacks to go with 11 kills, .526 hitting percentage, 15 digs and an assist.

Brockway started the night strong and led by four points, 3-7, early on. After a Brink kill, Newcome helped to bring the Lady Chucks back in the game with four kills over the following six points to edge in front, 9-8.
The Lady Rovers regained a three-point lead, 10-13, before the Lady Chucks tied it with the next three points on a Weaver kills and two Reitz aces. Neither squad could pull away and were tied seven times with the last at 21-21.
After a States' tip tied it at 21-21, Sydney Phillips lined a pair of aces around a pair of Weaver blocks for the 25-21 victory.
Having a slight 8-7 early lead in second set, Punxsy made a small spurt powered by Weaver. The middle hitter killed a ball and combined with Gallina on a block before killing another ball as part of a five-point run to make it 12-7.
Brockway would get no closer than a three-point difference, 19-16 before two more kills by Weaver led a second five-point run to open a 24-16 lead. After two Lady Rover points, Gallina downed an attack for the game-ending point, 25-18.
It was the Reitz serving show in game three. The junior setter served for 12 of the Lady Chucks' 25 points, including the game's first eight points, as both Weaver and States added a pair of kills for an 8-0 margin.
Punxsy held Brockway at arms length the rest of the way before Brink hit a cross court winner for the final point, 25-10, to complete the three-game sweep.
"We had a bit of a slow start getting acclimated to a new system and rotation," explained Good. "The girls really adjusted well by the end of the game."
In the Junior Varsity match, Punxsy recorded a three-set win over the Brockway, 25-20, 23-25 and 15-12.
Keeley Dubensky highlighted the JV Lady Chucks with four kills.
Punxsy was down by as many as seven points two times in the first game before coming back to win, 25-20.
"We are proud of the comeback wins in the first and third games," said assistant coach Andrew Tygert. "It was good how they bounced back when we were down and showed their intensity."
Punxsy will be right back at home tonight when it plays host to Kane starting at 6 p.m.
