PUNXSUTAWNEY – After not being able to capitalize on an energized start, Punxsy saw DuBois Central ease past it for the 5-0 girls’ soccer victory Thursday in Punxsutawney.
“We let them (DCC) get into a rhythm and we got out of ours,” said Lady Chucks coach Kevin Hughes.
The Lady Chucks started out strong with a lot of energy and were taking the game to the Lady Cardinals but could not capitalize on the charge.
DCC reversed the fortune and were able to find the net four times in the opening 40 minutes of action for a 4-0 intermission lead.
Punxsy came out again stronger from the half and made two pushes to the DCC side of the field in the first 10 minutes but came away empty.
Chucks goalie Alicia Switlick recorded a nifty save on a cross to the right corner of the goal at 54:18 in the stanza. DCC posted its final tally of the match at 64:51 on a 30-yard free kick from the right sideline high into the goal.
Punxsy (1-3) did not back down as Karah Hollis booted a shot from the left wing to the middle of the goal, where the DCC keep was just able to control before a home teammate could get a second shot on the rebound.
Sydney Dubensky added a shot that went just wide two minutes later and the Lady Chucks made two final pushes with three minutes left but to no avail.
Switlick made the final stop of her 11 second half saves on a hard shot from short range with 12 seconds remaining to keep the final at 5-0.
The Lady Cardinals out-shot the host 22-5 but the Lady Chucks’ Alli Fye recorded six first half saves.
Punxsy returns to the field next Monday, Sept. 17th for a 5 p.m. match at Brockway.
