John Smilo, 87, Glen Campbell, died Tuesday, March 6, 2012, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.
He was born Aug. 5, 1924, in Grant Township, Indiana County, a son of the late Joseph and Justina (Ivanko) Smilo.
June 15, 1957, Mr. Smilo married his wife of 54 years, Irene (Hook) Smilo, who survives.
He served as Seaman First Class in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Mr. Smilo was a member of Ss. Peter & Paul Orthodox Church in Urey, where he had actively served his church in many capacities through the years.
Prior to his retirement, he had worked at Greensteel for 37 years. He had also worked in the deep coal mines.
Mr. Smilo was known as a hard worker. In his spare time, he greatly enjoyed gardening and hunting.
In addition to his wife, surviving relatives include four sons, Dr. John Smilo and wife Traci of Coshocton, Ohio, Michael Smilo of Punxsutawney, Ronald Smilo and wife Maria of Natchez, Miss., and Matthew Smilo of DuBois; seven grandchildren, Tyler and Bradley Smilo, Joshua Yount and wife Heather, Vanessa Yount, Rachel and Jacob Smilo and Mary Smilo; three great-grandchildren, Evan, Eva and Delilah; a brother, George Smilo of Erie; a sister-in-law, Margie Hook of Glen Campbell; a brother-in-law, Ronald Hook and wife Sally of Marion Center; and numerous nephews and nieces.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Amanda Irene Smilo, Feb. 5, 2000; four brothers, Mike, Steve, Peter and Andy Smilo; and two sisters, Pauline Stiver and Mary Smilo.
Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, March 8, 2012, and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, March 9, 2012, at the Rairigh Funeral Home Ltd. in Hillsdale.
There will be a Parastas service at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 9, 2012.
The Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 10, 2012, at Ss. Peter & Paul Orthodox Church in Urey with the V. Rev. Fr. Mark Meholick as celebrant.
Interment with military honors will follow at Ss. Peter & Paul Orthodox Church Cemetery, Urey.
