EDINBORO — Saturday, a group of Punxsy athletes traveled to Edinboro for the second consecutive weekend to compete at the Tri-State Track Coaches Association's Meet No. 3 at Edinboro University, and in their final qualifying attempt of the year, several of the athletes positioned themselves to possibly compete at the Tri-State Championship Meet Feb. 18 at Edinboro.
Punxsy head coach John Smith said the athletes that put themselves in the best position to qualify were those on the distance medley relay team, which ran an overall time of 12:25.12 Saturday.
With the final qualifying meet scheduled to take place in Ohio next weekend — a trip Punxsy's team won't be making — the qualifying results aren't official yet, and the Chucks will have to wait until Feb. 14 when the official qualifiers are announced to know their fate.
Bo Dinger started the medley relay with what Smith called a "good time" in the 1200-meter leg, followed by Eric Ingros' 57 second leg in the 400-meter portion.
Luke Fugate ran a 2:21 for the Chucks in the 800-meter leg, and Nate Ward finished the race in the longest portion — the 1600-meter — in five minutes flat.
Punxsy's Karah Hollis also stands a "formidable chance" of qualifying in the long jump, Smith said, with a distance of 14 feet, 10 1/2-inches.
Smith also said Ward has "an outside shot" of qualifying individually with his 800-meter run time of 2:11.33.
Smith noted strong performances by Ward and Dinger, though the times will likely not qualify them for the Tri-State Meet.
Ward ran a "good mile time" of 5:01.17, Smith said, and Dinger ran an 10:36.78 in the 3000-meter run.
Fugate finished just 30 seconds behind Ward in the mile run with a time of 5:30.03.

In the boys' long jump, Thomas Pisoni jumped 12 feet, 10 inches.
Ingros (26.91), William Boddorf (27.49) and Thomas Pisoni (30.23) competed in the 200-meter dash.
Ingros also competed in the 400-meter dash, clocking in at 58.07 seconds.
Boddorf and Pisoni competed in the 60-meter dash, finishing in 8.35 and 8.67 seconds, respectively.
Alexis Young competed for the Lady Chucks in the one-mile run, finishing in 6:05.37.
Juliann Boddorf rounded out the Punxsy competitors with a 29.31 in the 200-meter dash.
