PUNXSUTAWNEY — Opening a restaurant is no easy task, but that didn’t stop Lillian Cameron.
And Jan. 31, she celebrated the fifth anniversary of her business, Lily’s Restaurant, Bakery & Deli, by handing out pieces of cake to customers.
“It took a lot of hard work, dedication,” Cameron said. “I’m happy to be here. I hope I’m here for 25 more years.”
Cameron said growing up, she learned the ins-and-outs of the restaurant business, as her parents opened a restaurant when she was in third grade. She also ran a restaurant, Pasquale’s, with her sister for five years, but then decided she wanted to branch out on her own.
“It’s easier to be in business on your own because if you make a mistake, you don’t have anyone to blame in on but yourself,” she said.
Cameron attributes much of her success to her hard-working employees.
“The employees are just wonderful,” she said. “Some of them have been here since the day I opened. They’re good girls.”
Her staff members are really in tune with the customers, Cameron said, paying close attention to how the “regulars” like their tea, coffee and food prepared and taking it upon themselves to serve their orders that way without being asked.
Originally, Cameron wanted a restaurant with only carry-out, but she adapted to what the community wanted. After listening to customers, she decided to have a sit-down restaurant with reasonable prices.
“The prices are right, it’s all homemade food, and the girls cater to their customers,” she said.
Cameron is thankful for her dedicated customers and the support she has received from the community.
“The people in this town really are amazing, how they support you, and you have to support them too,” she said.
