PUNXSUTAWNEY — A home run by Ligonier Valley's Kristen Gabelt stood as the only run during her team's 1-0 victory over the Punxsy softball team during a rain-shortened five-inning game Friday at Harry Noerr Field in Punxsutawney.
Ligonier (18-1) scored seven times in the top of the sixth inning, but with two outs, two runners on base and a 2-2 count on Lizzie Newhouse during that inning, lightning paused the game.
Rain quickly began to fall after the initial lightning strike, and after the teams waited a half-hour, the game was rendered complete. Since the sixth inning was not completed, the score reverted back to the last finished inning, which was the fifth.
No runners reached third base through three innings when Gabelt's leadoff solo home run off Punxsy starting pitcher Shawnna Crago clanked off a vehicle in right field.
The Lady Chucks (9-4) never advanced a runner to second base, as Christine Henderson threw five innings of two-hit ball. She did not walk a batter and struck out five.
Hannah Neal was 2-for-2 for Punxsy, but was caught in an attempt to steal second base after she singled in the first inning. She had the team's only hits, while Ashley Couser reached base on an error during the fifth inning.
Crago surrendered one run on four hits with no walks and six strikeouts.
Maddy Grimm, Julie Kiser and Jackie Berry each singled for Ligonier Valley.
Punxsy will have two days off before it will host Hollidaysburg at 4:15 p.m. Monday. The Lady Chucks' game today at Smethport was cancelled.
