PUNXSUTAWNEY — Once she settled in, Curwensville wasn't going to stop Punxsy senior Shawnna Crago Friday afternoon at Harry Noerr Field in Punxsutawney.
Crago allowed a run on two hits and two walks during the first inning before she controlled the Lady Golden Tide during the final six innings of the Punxsy softball team's 7-1 victory.
Crago also produced offensively for the Lady Chucks (6-0). She hit a two-run home run during Punxsy's three-run fifth inning that extended the team's lead to 6-1.
A base running mistake by Punxsy coupled with Crago's ineffectiveness early on, but as the game wore on, the Lady Chucks began to play like the undefeated team that they are.
"The bottom line is that we came back," Punxsy manager Alan Pifer said. "It wasn't the prettiest win of the season by any means, but we did enough to win. A win's a win."
Crago threw a complete game and surrendered one run on five hits with four walks and nine strikeouts. She struck out two batters with runners on second and third to end the third inning, and another punch out with two runners on ended the sixth inning. Only one Curwensville runner passed second base after the first inning.
"Early on, Shawnna was struggling with her control and not hitting her spots. I was a little concerned for a while, but as the game went she got stronger," Pifer said. "I'm happy overall with her performance. She rose to the occasion as the competitor she is."
Crago finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Taylor Powell also drove in two runs.
Crago started the second inning with a single and later scored on Tia Davis' RBI single up the middle. Davis then came home on Ashley Couser's sacrifice fly to right field after Megan Muth and Kristen Fedder drew walks to load the bases.
Hannah Neal reached second base on an error to lead off the third inning, stole third base and later scored on a ground ball off the bat of Powell.
Leadoff hitter Ashley Barenchik started the fifth inning with a single and was sacrificed to second by Neal. Powell's RBI double in the right-center field gap scored Barenchik before Crago lifted a two-run home run to left field.
"That gave us a little bit of breathing room," Pifer said about the three-run fifth inning.
Pinch hitter Janie Depp-Hutchinson singled and scored on Neal's sacrifice fly during the sixth inning for Punxsy's final run.
Curwensville's Madison Peterman drew a one-out walk in the first inning and later scored on Tiffany Carter's two-out single.
Punxsy will travel to St. Marys to take on the Lady Flying Dutch at 4:15 p.m. Monday. The Lady Chucks beat St. Marys April 6 at home, 4-3.
