PUNXSUTAWNEY — The honor was given last year, but Tuesday, state Sen. Joe Scarnati saluted CRW Home Center and its owners, Tim and Cindy Chambers, as the 2010 Punxsutawney Area Chamber of Commerce Small Business of the Year.
The award is given annually to a business that exemplifies the values and principals of a community-oriented small business.
“These businesses are the foundation of our communities throughout the Commonwealth,” Scarnati said. “For that reason, it gives me great pleasure to be here today and to recognize CRW Home Center.”
The couple opened the business in 1988 at a location off Mahoning Street near the Punxy Plaza. They later expanded to the current location on Martha Street.
“Definitely from humble beginnings,” Tim Chambers said. “We’re quite honored, first with the Chamber and now with Joe (Scarnati) showing up to present this. We are just overwhelmed.”
When asked why they thought CRW Home Center was chosen as the Small Business of the Year, the couple cited their community involvement and treatment of customers.
“We do try to support a lot of things in the community,” Tim Chambers said. “We’ve been active in 4-H for a great number of years. We’ve purchased animals at the auction, and that’s something that we share with our employees. We are also involved with the Rails- to-Trails projects. I think that helps bring this on.”
Dealing with customers is perhaps the most important part of operating a small business, Cindy Chambers said.
“You have to have honesty, integrity, be straight-forward and bend over backwards for your customers,” she said. “We try to have that reflected in our employees, as well. We feel that is what has helped us grow.”
The couple thanked all of the people of the area, with Tim saying, “They made us who we are today.”
