ERIE — A Punxsutawney Area High School graduate playing baseball at Mercyhurst College in Erie recently earned two awards.
Senior Nick Gillung, a member of PAHS' 2007 state title-winning team, earned the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division Pitcher of the Week honor and was one of the Louisville Sluggers Players of the Week after a 15-strikeout game against Palm Beach Atlantic March 3 in Florida.
The left-handed pitcher from Worthville improved to 3-0 on the season after the double-digit strikeout performance.
He threw six innings and allowed one run on three hits and walked four during the Lakers' 10-3 victory. Fifteen of the 18 batters that Gillung retired were via strikeout.
The pitcher is now 4-0 this year with a 1.12 ERA through four starts and 16 innings. He has struck out a team-best 30 batters and walked 10, limiting opponents to a .211 batting average.
Gilling was one of four players named to the traditionally Division I Louisville Slugger award. Also joining him were Ziggie Vanderwall of Southern Arkansas (Division II) and Florida International's Kyle Fitzpatrick and UCLA's Trevor Bauer, both Division I players.
Gilling has now received the PSAC West Pitcher of the Week award three times in his career.
Entering its next game at Gannon Friday, the Lakers are 13-3. They have won four-straight games and 10 of their last 11.
