FOXBURG — A tight game throughout went in the Punxsy girls' basketball team's favor Monday night, as the Lady Chucks started the final week of their season with a 51-46 win over A-C Valley.
The quality road victory was Punxsy's first away from home since Jan. 3. The win also snapped the Lady Chucks' six-game losing streak.
A-C Valley (5-12) had won two-straight games entering Monday.
"The girls played very hard tonight and played with a lot of pride," Punxsy head coach Randy Reitz said. "It was a nice win on the road."
Seniors Jenna Reitz and Shawnna Crago each excelled Monday, scoring 17 points apiece. Reitz made four three-pointers and added four assists, and Crago pulled down nine rebounds.
"We were able to go inside-outside tonight," coach Reitz said. "The kids moved the ball around against (A-C Valley's) zone very well. The kids got some good looks."
Punxsy (5-15) trailed 14-13 after the first quarter before it led 25-23 at halftime and 38-37 entering the fourth.
A 13-9 fourth quarter in the Lady Chucks' favor helped them win.
"We had a little bit of the lead in the fourth quarter, and they had to come out of their zone," coach Reitz said. "We were able to get some baskets off our man-to-man offense."
Also scoring for Punxsy were Alex Magill (seven points), Parris Kernich (six) and Taylor Newcome (four).
Leading the Lady Falcons in scoring were Megan Cratty (16 points), Tricia Kerlin (10) and Kelsey Broocks (10).
Punxsy will compete at home for the final time this season tonight, starting with the junior-varsity game at 6 p.m. The Lady Chucks host Penn Cambria.
