BLOOMSBURG — Alex Thomas earned Outstanding Wrestler honors, and Punxsutawney native and redshirt sophomore Steven Cressley finished third at 184 pounds during Clarion University's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championship-winning performance in Bloomsburg this past month.
Thomas (197 pounds), James Fleming (157 pounds) and Bekzod Abdurakhmonov (165 pounds) each won individual titles to lead the Golden Eagles toward their first PSAC team crown since 1994.
Clarion tallied 135 1/2-points to control the rest of the field. Bloomsburg followed with 110 1/2-points, and Edinboro scored 109 to take third. Clarion ended Edinboro's streak of five-straight PSAC titles.
Cressley, a 2008 PAHS graduate who reached the PIAA tournament during his senior year, finished 3-1 overall at the PSAC Championships. He registered an 8-5 decision over Lock Haven's Jacob Bachman for third place.
After beating East Stroudsburg's Brendan McKeown (15-9) to start the tournament, Cressley lost via major decision to Edinboro's Chris Honeycutt, 11-2. Honeycutt won the 184- pound PSAC title.
After beating Millersville's Jason Foor by an 18-3 technical fall, he finished the tournament with the victory over Bachman.
Later in December, Clarion upset Edinboro in Waterford with a 25-21 victory.
The win was the Golden Eagles' first over the Fighting Scots since Feb. 6, 1998.
During the win, Cressley suffered a 10-2 major decision loss to Honeycutt, who was the No. 2-ranked 184-pounder in the country at the time of the bout.
Cressley is 10-7 on the season.
