PUNXSUTAWNEY — Punxsutawney’s PRIDE has something to be proud of.
The non-profit organization is pleased to announce the reprinting of “Out of Our Kitchens,” a cookbook, according to board member Shirley Sharp, prepared from the recipes of local cooks.
The 215-page Cookbook Publishers Inc. product — originally compiled and published by the 1981-82 members of the Punxsutawney Young Women’s Club, which no longer exists — has been out of print for more than 20 years.
After receiving permission to reprint, PRIDE (Punxsutawney Revitalization: Investing, Developing, Enhancing) refreshed the community cookbook by including current pictures of local scenes — inserted to separate the sections — and formated the recipes in a larger, easier-to-read font.
The PRIDE reprint is divided into seven segments, including: “Appetizers, Pickles, Relishes;” “Soups, Salads, Vegetables;” “Main Dishes;” “Breads, Rolls, Pastry;” “Cakes, Cookies, Desserts;” “Candy, Jelly, Preserves;” and “Beverages and Miscellaneous.”
From Carol Meneely’s “Pineapple Snow Cake” to Pam Boyer’s “Beef Biscuit Pie” and everything in between, the publication — which benefits the area, as all proceeds will be put toward downtown — offers readers, in addition to a helping of hometown spirit, a slice of Punxsutawney’s past.
One, and in some cases two, generations of area residents have enjoyed food prepared using the recipes in the book, Sharp said.
“What’s interesting is, the people who gave these recipes are now marrying off their daughters,” she said. “These people cooked for their children and their children have these memories of this food.”
PRIDE board member and former Punxsutawney Young Women’s Club member Katie Laska recommended the reprinting project due to the number of requests she had received for the book.
“It is a great way to hand down old family recipes to a new generation of cooks,” she said. “All of these women take pride in their recipes and are pleased to share them with their hometown.”
The book is available at downtown merchants, including Fairlady & Company, the Chamber of Commerce, Catarina’s, Roseman’s Florist & Gifts and Lily’s LLC.
The organization additionally offers shipping to out of town shoppers. For more information, call 938-2493.
