PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Stompin' Seniors ignored an 8-0 deficit within the first four minutes of the game and scored 34-straight points during a 34-8 victory over the Jersey Juniors during PAHS' annual Powderpuff football game Thursday night at Jack LaMarca Memorial Stadium.
Five different seniors were able to score a touchdown, as after cutting the Juniors' lead to 8-6 entering the second quarter, the Seniors managed 14 points during each of the second and third quarters.
The Juniors went three-and-out before "punting" to the Seniors at the onset of the game. Referees simply stepped off 30 yards to signify the punt.
The Juniors quickly got the ball back when Alex Magill intercepted a Kristen Fedder pass at the 50-yard line. Shortly thereafter, Magill provided another spark for the Juniors, as she caught a pass from Rebecca Shiock and scored a 44-yard touchdown.
Shaina Reddinger scored the two-point conversion on a rush around the left end, and the Jersey Juniors were ahead 8-0 with 8:26 remaining in the first quarter.
It didn't take long for the Seniors to answer. Allie Shields' 10-yard rush was followed by a 60-yard jaunt that made it an 8-6 contest with 6:50 left in the first quarter. A failed two-point try helped the Juniors preserve their slim advantage.
The Juniors were able to move the ball across midfield, but a turnover on downs put the ball in the Seniors' hands once again. The Seniors advanced to midfield as the first quarter came to a close, and 2:34 into the second quarter, they jumped ahead 12-6 when Ashley Barenchik scampered for a 29-yard TD.
A two-point screen pass from Melissa Blose to Tawnee Bowers made it a 14-6 game.
The Juniors turned the ball over on their ensuing drive, as Mesha Brink's interception pushed the momentum in the Seniors' favor even more. After a handful of quality runs by Tori Mitchell moved the ball toward the goal line, Shawnna Crago's 10-yard touchdown carry made it 20-8 with 5:36 left in the first half.
Another three-and-out by the Juniors followed, but after the Seniors crossed the 40-yard line, Shannon Carpenter intercepted a Crago pass as halftime arrived.
The second half started well for the Seniors, who received a 65-yard touchdown rush from Hannah Giavedoni just 86 seconds into the final half. Nikki Martz's two-point conversion upped the Seniors' lead to 28-8.
The Juniors once again crossed the 50-yard line after a Cassie Cook first down, but they were forced to punt yet another time.
The Seniors then began to air the ball out, as Martz hooked up with Timi Shiock for a 48-yard pass from the Seniors' 32-yard line to the Juniors' 20.
After losing a yard on a rush, the Seniors scored the final touchdown of the game on a Martz to Parris Kernich 21-yard pass with 41.8 seconds left in the third quarter.
An interception by Megan Muth quickly put the ball back in the Seniors' hands, and they began to run the clock out.
Two big first-down runs on fourth down by quarterback Jenna Reitz helped the Seniors continue their drive. The Seniors were actually able to score three times during their final drive, but a trio of holding calls brought all three touchdowns back. Hannah Neal scored two of the would-be touchdowns that were brought back due to penalties.
