Ready, aim, fire! Barclay Square cannons refurbished by Eagle Scout Jim Carrier

Clear the deck; there's a cannonball coming now that the cannons in Barclay Square have been restored, thanks to Eagle Scout Jim Carrier (second from left) at the suggestion of Punxsutawney Mayor Rich Alexander (far left).

VFW/Lions flea market an ongoing affair

The Punxsutawney Lions and VFW recently held their second annual flea market and craft show, with seven vendors in attendance.

This year, the flea market was held at the Punxsy VFW, across from Joe's Drive In in Punxsutawney.

The Punxsy Lions Club will hold two more flea markets this year, on Sept. 20 and Oct. 11.

Big Brothers Big Sisters Headed to This Weekend’s Diamond Rio Show

This year’s Brookville Community Days, hosted by the Brookville Volunteer Fire Company, will wrap up on Saturday with a performance by the band Diamond Rio. Diamond Rio is also a national sponsor of the Big Brothers Big Sisters program, raising over $1.5 million to aid the cause.

As such, BBBS directors have selected two matches from Jefferson, Elk and McKean counties to attend the concert, where they will get to meet the band members and the kids will receive an autographed Diamond Rio banner.

The Punxsutawney Weather Discovery Center has a new, colorful exhibit that is sure to catch the eye of the youngsters who visit. The Hands On Weather (HOW) backpacks exhibit was put up on Aug. 7 and is already proving to be quite popular with visitors. PSP-Punxsy investigating attempted suicide

August 15, 2014

HENDERSON TOWNSHIP — Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police reported that they are investigating an attempted suicide that took place at approximately 3:45 p.m. on Friday at a residence on Kramer Road in Henderson Township.

Police said the victim — a 60-year-old Reynoldsville man — was discovered with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest and was transported to Altoona Hospital for the treatment of his injuries.

The investigation is ongoing.

Local business opens with ribbon cutting

It was a long-awaited ribbon cutting, but as of Friday, it's officially in the books.

A group of Punxsutawney citizens, borough officials and legislators helped with the cutting of the ribbon at the Primary Health Network’s new facility, located on Prushnok Drive in Punxsutawney. Pictured is Don Perry, president of the board of directors of Primary Health Network, cutting the ribbon with help from the group members.

PennDOT issues Summervile Bridge closure details

August 15, 2014

Beginning Monday, Aug. 18, the Route 3007 Summerville Bridge will close to traffic between Route 28 and Broad Street to facilitate the bridge replacement project, but will remain open to local traffic. The bridge is expected to reopen Saturday, Aug. 23. All work is weather dependent.

A posted detour will be in place using Route 3022 (Roller Coaster Road) to Route 3003 (Mount Pleasant Road) to Route 28. Work will be done on a 24-hour schedule during the detour.

Man shoots bartender, kills self in Brockport incident

August 14, 2014

HORTON TWP. — A 31-year-old Brockway man opened fire around midnight Thursday outside a Brockport bar before turning the gun on himself.

According to the police report, Eric Carlson, 31, of Brockway became upset with a 20-year-old female bartender at the Brockport Army & Navy Club when she attempted to close the bar. An argument reportedly started between the bartender and Carlson.

A crowd gathered in Barclay Square on Thursday night to see The SharpTones rock the stage for the final installment of Music in the Park 2014. The SharpTones got the crowd on its feet, while Hannah Craig (bottom photo, left), clad in a poodle skirt and 1950s attire, danced with Aubrey Ott. With the conclusion of the annual program comes a sure sign that autumn is just around the corner.

Local church upgrading to new facility

One local church is upgrading its facility and has come to the end of Phase I in its construction process.

The Roseville Independent Chapel has completed the first phase in the construction of its new building.

2014 MUSIC IN THE PARK CONCLUDES TONIGHT!

The 2014 Music in the Park campaign concludes tonight with a concert by The Sharp Tones, a band that plays a musical mix from the 1960s & 1970s. The show runs from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in Barclay square.

Additional charges filed in Pine Creek Twp. assault

PINE CREEK TOWNSHIP — Last Friday, Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police reported that Donald Guy Shaffer, 64, Brookville, had been charged with aggravated assault after allegedly assaulting a female with a baseball bat at 11:30 p.m. on Aug. 7 in Pine Creek Township.

On Tuesday, police issued a report that, based upon a continuing investigation by police and consultation with the Jefferson County District Attorney’s office, an additional charge of criminal attempt/homicide was filed on Monday.

Bucktail Council’s Camp Mountain Run Accredited

August 11, 2014

Camp Mountain Run recently earned a 100-percent rating for its Cub Scout and Boy Scout program from a nationally accredited team that visited the Scouting facility located on Mountain Run Road in Penfield. The five members of the team evaluated Camp Mountain Run’s campsite, facility, program areas and opportunities for Scouts to have fun, according to Robert Powell, camp director. Camp officials received pennants and an accreditation certificate.
