Tunes for Tots set to rock the town

PUNXSUTAWNEY — It's that time of year again, time to think about Thanksgiving dinner, Black Friday shopping and Christmas. But what about those children throughout our community who are in need this holiday season. The Loyal Order of Moose - Punxsutawney No. 954, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie No. 1231 and the Salvation Army of Punxsutawney have teamed together again this year for the Kickoff Event of the 4th Annual Tunes for Tots & Auction.

Borough Police bring seatbelt program to PAHS

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Punxsutawney Borough Police paid a visit to Punxsutawney Area High School on Tuesday to remind the students, faculty and staff that using their seatbelts is not an option, and you will receive a citation if you're caught not having it on.

According to a Punxsutawney Borough Police news release, "20 law enforcement agencies across Pennsylvania have agreed to participate in this one-week Teen Seatbelt Mobilization scheduled this week," the release said, adding that this Teen Mobilization will coincide with the National Teen Driver Safety Week.

Lisa Anderson of Punxsutawney (pictured in the center) participated in the Terrible Towel Wave at the beginning of Monday night’s Pittsburgh Steelers game against the Houston Texans at Heinz Field. Billy Gardell and Seth Meyers were on-hand to help the ladies wave in the game. The NFL goes pink in the month of October in recognition of breast cancer awareness and to show its support for survivors and for those still battling.

Longview students learn to make apple butter

NORTH MAHONING TOWNSHIP — Second and third-graders from Longview Elementary School helped seniors at the Mahoning Hills Senior Center create apple butter on Tuesday, despite the rainy weather.

FCOG to host annual 'Free Clothing Days'

YOUNG TOWNSHIP — Almost everyone has heard of "Where's Waldo?" The same could be applied to the First Church of God's "Free Clothing Days," as Shelley Rowan, coordinator, appears to be overwhelmed with the amount of clothing that has been donated again this year.

“Free Clothing Days" will be held this Friday and Saturday at the First Church of God gymnasium on Skyview Drive, Young Township.

Punxsy Concert Association to open season with music recalling '60s folk era

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsutawney Concert Association will begin its 2014-2015 season on Tuesday, Oct. 21, with William Florian, former lead singer of the Grammy-winning folk supergroup of the 1960s, The New Christy Minstrels. In his show “Those Were the Days,” he will celebrate the spirit of the 1960s at the Punxsutawney Area High School auditorium at 7:30 p.m.

Halloweenfest to offer tricks and treats Oct. 25

Halloweenfest, sponsored by Punxsy Dental, is an afternoon of fun set for noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25 in Barclay Square. Even bigger and better than last's year debut, the event promises to overflow with plenty of attractions, as well as tricks (of the magic kind, that is) and treats of all sorts for area youngsters and their families to enjoy.

BREAKING NEWS: No Halloween Parade this year

At their department meeting on Thursday night, members of the Punxsutawney Fire Department voted to not hold the Halloween Parade this year after Borough Council rejected the department's request to hold trick-or-treat and the parade together in the borough on Oct. 30.

FESTIVAL FOR THE FIGHT

A special indoor carnival fundraiser will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. this Saturday at the Punxsy CMA Church. Tickets will be available for carnival games, balloon animals, popcorn, cotton candy, entertainment, the concession stand and prizes. All proceeds go to benefit Maddox Hyde and his fight against cancer. The fundraiser is being put together by Emily Schall, who wants to help Maddox out. Pictured here are Schall (left) and Hyde.

Commissioners recognize causes at busy meeting

BROOKVILLE — At their most recent meeting on Tuesday, the Jefferson County commissioners issued proclamations related to domestic violence, disability employment and drug and alcohol abuse and also heard from members of the community on humane control and the future of the coal industry.
