Pizza & Prevention drive sells 1,333 pizzas, cards; $13,000 in proceeds likely PUNXSUTAWNEY - It need not be said, but it's worth saying again. The Pizza & Prevention effort spearheaded by Fox's Pizza Den of Punxsutawney just keeps getting bigger and bigger. Saturday, Fox's - with the help of members of the Punxsutawney Fire Department - achieved its goal of breaking last year's record of selling more than a total of 1,244 pizzas. “It was a record-breaking year,” Fox's owner Scott Anthony said, noting that there were 1,333 pizzas/pizza cards sold, with a total of $12,143.63, plus tips & donations, going to the fire department. “Although exact figures are not in, we are sure that more than $13,000 was raised just yesterday,” Anthony said Sunday night. “Other donations are to filter over the next two weeks by persons who could not make it.” Also, Burger King supported the effort by having Fox's distribute BOGO coupons that, when redeemed, will earn money for the fire department. “I am tired but happy,” Anthony said. “It is amazing to see how the momentum keeps building for this event. “The Bible says to ‘make friends by means of your unrighteous riches,' referring to our material assets,” he said. “I feel that partnering with the Punxsutawney Fire Department is the best way I can do that. It would be hard to find another group that unbiasedly helps all.” Anthony said it is “amazing” to see the wide demographics of the volunteer firefighters - young people in their 20s to senior citizens, from all income and education levels - bringing different skills to the table to form a united team of hometown heroes. “The firemen cooked, answered phones, cleaned, delivered pizza,” he said. “They really demonstrated the meaning of volunteering. Working with them gives you a safe and secure feeling, knowing that they've ‘got your back' in case of an emergency. Anthony said the effort wouldn't be possible without the help of the many co-sponsors. “The Kengersky Insurance Agency has been a key partner with us for several years in this effort. It is great to see a business that cares so much about the residents of Punxsutawney that they actually go out and buy smoke detectors for people's homes so that a potential disaster can be averted,” he said. Other co-sponsors include The Punxsutawney Spirit; Mayor James Wehrle; Pinned Designs; Fezell's County Market; Wal-Mart; Personally Yours Printing; WPXZ 104.1 FM; Pifer Funeral Home Inc.; Mike Defelice Construction; Punxsutawney Burger King; and Sunny Dell Foods. Anthony also saluted the residents of Punxsutawney who stopped by, ordered pizzas and bought coupon cards to show their support for the event. “They were very generous with their tips and donations, too,” he said. “A community event is nothing without the community,” Anthony said. “These people waited patiently for their pizzas - some up to two hours - but they did it with a cheerful attitude knowing that they were helping others, too.” He noted that a former Punxsutawney resident, Edla Reynolds, drove more than three hours to be part of the event.
