Clearfield's Rowles baffles Lady Chucks' softball team Print E-mail
Friday, 30 March 2007
CLEARFIELD - Punxsy starting pitcher Brooke Callen allowed just five hits, but Clearfield's Mandy Rowles won the pitching battle to lead the Lady Bisons to a 2-0 win Thursday.
"I'm a little disappointed, actually, but I'm not really concerned," Punxsy head coach Alan Pifer said. "You have to give Clearfield their due; they're solid. They got the hits when they needed them, as opposed to when we didn't. That was the difference in the game."
Runs were at apremium, as the Lady Chucks (1-1) were able to get just five girls on base, but the lack of key hits stopped Punxsy from getting on the scoreboard.
Neither team scored in the first three innings, but three consecutive singles put Clearfield on the board in the fourth.
With runners on first and third in a 1-0 game, Clearfield's Alyssa Anderson flew out to left field, and as Rowles attempted to tag home, Punxsy sophomore Allie Miller gunned Clearfield's pitcher at the plate.
"Allie Miller did a real nice job out in left field," Pifer said. "In addition to throwing a girl out at the plate, she made a couple other nice catches."
Miller was 1-for-3 with a single in her first varsity start in left field. However, Miller accounted for one-third of Punxsy's hits.
Clearfield gained its second run in the sixth inning as Ashley Lias scored on two errors committed by the Lady Chucks with two outs.
Seniors Lauren Martino and Nicole Cappella had the other two singles, as Rowles struck out five.
"Rowles had a nice drop, and after facing her just once last year, we weren't prepared for that," Pifer said. "A few base runners that we did have, we just weren't able to get key hits on."
Punxsy's greatest opportunity to break the scoreless spell came in the sixth. After Kelsey McFarland reached base on an error with one out, Martino singled to push McFarland to second.
However, Rowles retired the next two batters, and the rally was squashed.
Callen gave up just one earned run on five hits while striking out eight.
"Brooke had a nice game," Pifer said. "She deserves a better fate than she got."
Next up for the Lady Chucks is a trip to Karns City Saturday.
"We just have to put this behind us and go get Karns City on Saturday," Pifer said.
