William “Bill” C. Charles Jr., 77

William “Bill” C. Charles Jr., 77, Glen Campbell (Smithport), died Wednesday, March 16, 2011, at Indiana Regional Medical Center.

He was born Jan. 9, 1934, in Hamilton, a son of the late William Clair and Bertha (Johnson) Charles Sr.

Aug. 14, 1965, he married his wife of more than 45 years, Ruth A. (Brickell) Charles, who survives, of Glen Campbell.

Mr. Charles was a member of the Smithport United Methodist Church.
During peacetime, he served as a private in the U.S. Army from Oct. 26, 1956, to Oct. 24, 1958, as well as serving in the Army Reserves before and after his period of active duty.

Mr. Charles began his working career as an orderly and a custodian at the Adrian Hospital, where he met the woman who would become his wife.
From 1972 to 1999, he was employed as a custodian for the Punxsutawney Area School District.

He greatly loved spending time with his grandkids, and he enjoyed watching car races and spending time with his dogs, Hercules, Cuddles, Goober and Peanut.

In addition to his wife, surviving relatives include a daughter, Kimberly Charles Knox and husband Robert of Punxsutawney; a son, William R. Charles and wife Amanda (Mumau) of Glen Campbell; three grandchildren, Matthew Knox and friend Ashley, Sophia and Tyler Charles, and a grandson whose birth is expected in August; two siblings, Raymond Charles of New York and Dorothy Lee (Charles) Cramer and husband James of Reynoldsville; a sister-in-law, Helen G. Brickell of Glen Campbell; and his nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Rairigh Funeral Home Ltd. in Hillsdale.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 20, 2011, at the funeral home with the Rev. Bill Davis and the Rev. Robert Teasdale officiating.

Interment with the observance of military honors will follow at the Brickell Cemetery in Banks Township, Indiana County.
