PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Cincinnati Reds may have been eliminated from the Major League Baseball playoffs, but their memory will live on during Saturday's Punxsutawney Salvation Army Harvest Auction, as an autographed Devin Mesoraco Cincinnati Reds Major League Baseball jersey, baseball and bat will be up for grabs.

"Our auction continues to grow every year in merchandise and the money collected from it," said Capt. Keith Jache, co-commander of the Punxsutawney Salvation Army.

Jache said the 2011 auction raised about $10,000, and this year, they've set a goal of $12,000.

"Probably our most coveted item this year is the baseball, Cincinnati Reds jersey and baseball bat that were autographed by Devin (Mesoraco), a local boy who has made good who played catcher this past season on the Major League roster for the Reds," Jache said.

He said once again this year, there are many Amish-made items and furniture including a rocking chair, table and quilts.

Chef Bob Stevens from Aramark will prepare a dinner for four in your

home, Jache said, adding that the meal is always a popular item that everyone likes to bid on.

He said there are also numerous gift certificates that have been donated for this year's auction.

A complete list of items can be seen on page 5 of Thursday's edition of The Punxsutawney Spirit.

Jache said some of the items to be auctioned off are priceless, so it will be interesting to see how high items like the dinner for four and the Mesoraco items will go for on Saturday.

"Our auction continues to grow and we learned a lot from our friends in the Punxsutawney Rotary Club, who have had their own auction for many years, about how to have it run smoother," he said.

"It's only a month and a half before Christmas, and many of these items would make beautiful gifts," Jache said.

He said the money raised will go toward the Salvation Army's after-school program, utilities, its Bundle Up Program and to help those in need pay their rent.

"All of the money stays here locally; there are other organizations that have moved their operations out of Punxsy, but we are here to stay," Jache said.

Saturday's auction can be heard live from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on WPXZ 104.1FM.

The numbers to call for bidding are: 938-5530, 246-9880 or 246-9938.
