The West End Elementary School PTO recently unveiled the "Buddy Bench," which was purchased by the third-grade classes and the West End PTO.

Rose Martino said the Buddy Bench is a place for students to sit when they are lonely and are looking for a friend to play with.

If a student sees a friend sitting on the bench, he or she is encouraged to go over and invite the friend to play.

“It's cool to be kind. Be a buddy, not a bully,” Martino said, adding that the third-graders saw an article in their Scholastic News for a "Buddy Bench."

The students also took the Buddy Pledge: "I promise to be kind to others. I promise to be understanding of people's feelings. I will respect that everyone is different and individual. I believe it is very important to be a good friend.”

The entire school had the opportunity to try the bench out following a dedication ceremony.
