The Walk Talk Ten

June 21, 2011

1. I never understand why sports fans riot after their team wins or loses. How is destroying your town going to quell the fact that your team just lost? I understand that some people live and die by their team, but people shouldn't live and die by their team. Vancouver doesn't deserve a winner when more than 140 are injured and there is more than $1 million in reported property damage after one hockey game.

2. Tim Thomas and the Boston Bruins proved that no position in all of sports is more important than the goalie. A starting pitcher throws every three to five days, teams have won Super Bowls without great quarterback play, and one superstar usually can't lead a team to an NBA title. Thomas allowed just eight goals in seven games of the Stanley Cup Finals, including three in the final four games. Three of those final four games were Boston wins.

3. Don't let the Cavaliers fool you; they're going to take Duke point guard Kyrie Irving with the No. 1 pick Thursday. No position has become more important lately than the point guard, and the Cavaliers hope to have the same success as the Bulls have with Derrick Rose, who was drafted out of Memphis in 2008.

4. Sure, Rory McIlroy's 16-under 268 broke Tiger Woods' U.S. Open record dating back to 2000 (12-under 272). But he is not the next Tiger Woods.

5. Cardinals superstar Albert Pujols is out four to six weeks with a fractured left forearm. With Pujols out of action, this is the perfect time for the Pirates, who are only 4 1/2-games behind the Cardinals, to make their run.

6. You know the Marlins, losers of 18 of their last 19 games entering Monday, are in trouble when they bring back 80-year-old manager Jack McKeon. The Marlins went from first to last place in three weeks.

7. Sources say that New York will once again nix mixed martial arts' most recent attempt of being sanctioned in the state. What legislators don't comprehend is that MMA is much safer than football, hockey and even boxing. When a fighter is knocked unconscious, the match is over and the fighter is out of action for months. Yet we are still surprised when someone like the New York Rangers' Derek Boogaard dies after receiving numerous concussions during his career.

8. I really hope the NHL isn't the only American team sports league to watch by November due to the cancelation of the 2011-2012 NFL and NBA seasons.

9. Twenty-year-old supposed wunderkind Ricky Rubio finally reported to the Minnesota Timberwolves. How is Rubio, a point guard whom Minnesota drafted with the No. 5 pick in the 2009 draft, the answer if he averaged 4.8 ppg, 4.1 apg and shot 32 percent from the field with his Spanish league team Barcelona?

10. It's interesting to think that if Punxsy's Devin Mesoraco went to the University of Virginia and stayed there all four years, he would most likely be leading the Cavaliers in the College World Series right now. Instead, he's weeks or months away from his Major League debut with the Cincinnati Reds.
