PUNXSUTAWNEY â€" After winning Game 1 with ease, the Punxsy girls' volleyball team trailed 14-12 in Game 2 of a Senior Night match against Clearfield Thursday night.
Head coach Lisa Good called a rare timeout and asked her kids, "Is this the way you want to be remembered?"
The Lady Chucks provided a resounding "no" by going on a 13-0 run to take Game 2 before cruising to a 3-0 sweep of the Lady Bisons, 25-4, 25-14 and 25-7.
The win only meant more considering the Lady Chucks completed another amazing regular season with an 18-2 record following a 20-0 finish in 2006.
To add to that, seniors Alee Kromer, Heather Good, Katie Monoskey and Kelsey McFarland played their final home match of their careers. Coach Good said that it is always difficult to watch a senior class go, but this year, it was even harder, considering Heather is her daughter.
"It's a talented group of seniors academically and athletically. Every senior class, it's just really sad at the end," she said. "But in this case, these four kids I've known since they were little. I've had many memories with them â€" it's not just volleyball. And, of course, having a daughter was pretty emotional for me tonight as a mom."
On the court, the Lady Chucks had no trouble with the Lady Bisons. Punxsy led 4-2 before Kromer served up a 16-0 run to make it 20-2. The game was clearly out of reach for Clearfield, which lost Game 1 25-4.
Punxsy was able to string together 13 points in a row after trailing 14-12 in Game 2, as coach Good was sure to question what she could have said during that Game 2 timeout.
"I asked them after the game, ‘Tell me what I said. What was the magic word? I want to know it, because I want to use it again,'" she said. "They just went out and played like they can play."
Game 3 was much like the first, as Punxsy led 7-2 and 11-3 before a 9-0 run made it 20-3. The Lady Chucks completed the sweep with a 25-7 Game 3 triumph.
Kromer led the way with 19 service points, 19 digs, 11 kills, nine aces and two blocks. Heather Good compiled 30 set assists, 11 service points, nine digs and three aces.
McFarland had nine service points, five aces and four digs, while Monoskey's stats featured 13 service points, seven digs, five aces and four kills.
The Lady Chucks ended the night with 25 aces out of their 75 points scored, as Renee McCullough (two) and Holly Setree (one) had the final three. Sarah Fugate was one off Kromer's kill pace, as Fugate had 10.
Punxsy's junior-varsity team completed its season with a 16-4 record after the 25-10 and 25-11 victory over Clearfield. Punxsy lost to Clarion (25-9 and 25-19) Wednesday.
"JV wrapped up a good season," coach Good said. "They're predominately freshman kids out there on the court playing against sophomores and juniors. I hope they're back next year."
JV coach Glenn Good thanked all the JV parents for their help and support during another successful season.
While the JV season is over, the varsity team will now embark on the playoffs. The District IX Class AA Championships are Saturday at Clarion High School. Schedules have yet to be determined.
"It's not over yet, but it's over here at this building," Lisa Good said in reference to the PAHS gym. "I think they learned a lot, they grew a lot." |
