PUNXSUTAWNEY - Just two days after Punxsy suffered an 8-0 loss to Bradford and Clearfield beat a 10-3 DuBois team, the Lady Chucks and Lady Bisons played 100 minutes of scoreless girls' soccer Thursday afternoon at Jack LaMarca Memorial Stadium. "I was just glad that they rebounded from Tuesday's game," Punxsy head coach Tom Robicheau said. "Clearfield's playing good lately. We would have liked to get a win, but we could have lost as easily. I thought today was the best game I've seen my defense play."
The Lady Chucks had very few chances, as Lauren McGarvey and Chantel Brink each had one shot. Clearfield, on the other hand, took 28 shots and came up empty-handed.
"I was really proud with the way they played today - just hustling to the ball. When (goalkeeper Timi Shiock) made a save, we were clearing the ball out," Robicheau said. "We didn't make too many mistakes today. Clearfield was driving the ball down and getting some shots, but they weren't getting those second, third and fourth shots that we sometimes give up.
"I thought the senior leadership today really prevailed," he said. "I thought they brought the other girls around them, and even my freshman today played hard."
Though Clearfield had control of the ball for the majority of the game, the Lady Chucks' defense wasn't willing to give in.
"It was 100 minutes of soccer and both teams wanted it. After the first 80 minutes, they could have given up, but they didn't and kept playing hard," Robicheau said of his team. I just enjoy this type of soccer. The ball's back and forth, and ... this is the way they're capable of playing. If they play 110 percent all game long, you always have a chance."
Shiock, a freshman, had 24 saves as Punxsy has finished with a scoreless tie in two of Shiock's three shutouts this season. The other shutout for Shiock was a 6-0 victory over Clarion.
"Timi played excellent today. It's probably one of her best games I've seen her play as far as control," Robicheau said. "When she came out, she needed to; when she stayed in, she needed to. She really impressed me today."
Punxsy (5-10-2) is now 5-5-2 since starting the season 0-5. With three games remaining on the schedule, the Lady Chucks will play their third home game in a row at 11 a.m. Saturday against Brookville.
After that, Punxsy visits DuBois Tuesday and hosts DuBois Central Catholic next Thursday.
