PUNXSUTAWNEY — After a 21-point first half, the Punxsy girls' basketball team scored just seven points during the final two quarters of a 31-28 loss to District IX Class AAA foe Clearfield Wednesday night.
A win Wednesday would have clinched the No. 2 seed in the district playoffs for Punxsy (10-11, 7-4 D9 League). Instead, the Lady Bisons (14-6, 6-5) still have a shot at capturing a home playoff game.
Punxsy must beat Bradford Friday, or Elk County must be victorious over Clearfield Friday. Otherwise, Punxsy and Clearfield will finish 7-5 in the league, and power points will decide which squad claims the important playoff home game.
Though Bradford is just 4-17 on the season, Punxsy head coach Randy Reitz said his girls don't want to depend on a Clearfield loss Friday in order to claim that No. 2 spot.
"We're not going to overlook them," Reitz said of Bradford. "We know that this is a big game for us. We need to come away with a win."
Wednesday, Punxsy led 14-7 after the first quarter and 21-16 at the break. But the Lady Chucks' shots wouldn't fall once they came out after halftime.
"They did a nice job taking us out of sync with their zone during the second half," Reitz said. "They just packed it in because we weren't making our outside shots."
Punxsy finished 4-of-22 from three-point line. Both Jenna Reitz and Hannah Neal nailed two treys to score six points apiece.
Shawnna Crago tabulated a double-double with a game-high 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Megan McCully added four points, Amber Fye had two points, and Reitz totaled three assists.
Gwenn Porter (eight points) and Madison Sopic (seven) were Clearfield's leading scorers.
St. Marys (20-2, 10-2) already clinched the No. 1 seed for the playoffs. District IX Class AAA will be represented by just three playoff teams this season.
