David Jones, 86, a Doylestown resident since 1960, and a resident of Pine Run Community since 2005, passed away Friday, Feb. 5, 2010, at the Pine Run Health Center.
He was born in Punxsutawney, a son of the late David T. and Maud (Gordon) Jones.
Sept. 5, 2009, Mr. Jones and his wife, Rosaline Quick Jones, celebrated 59 years of marriage.
After graduating from Punxsutawney High School, he worked at CurtissWright Corp., airplane division, in Buffalo, N.Y., until entering the U.S. Army.
Mr. Jones was a veteran of World War II, serving with the 69th infantry division in Europe. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart and two Bronze Stars.
Following his military service, he graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1950, with a degree in education. He taught civics and history for eight years in western Pennsylvania before moving to Doylestown. He became a guidance counselor in the Central Bucks School District, working at Tamanend, Unami and Central Bucks High School.
Mr. Jones attended Lehigh University, earning his master’s degree in educational administration. Upon the opening of Central Bucks High School East, he became the director of guidance, where he remained until his retirement in 1991.
High school sports were of special interest to Mr. Jones. Over the years, he kept time at basketball games, swimming meets and wrestling matches. Due to his dedication and devotion to other CB East sports, he was inducted into the CB East Athletic Hall of Fame in 1996.
Mr. Jones was an avid fan of high school football and became the public address announcer for the Central Bucks School District in 1962. When Central Bucks East opened, he announced for the teams from both schools. He loved having fun when announcing the officials for the games. He would make up the colleges where they had “graduated.” Many of the officials broke into laughter on the field upon hearing their new “alma mater.” He always loved being around the players and coaches and was a great cheerleader on the buses. They all held a special place in his heart.
This enthusiasm caused a bit of a stir after the 1979 Thanksgiving East-West game. The East team had finally beaten West after 10 consecutive losses. Carried away with his emotions, Mr. Jones quoted Bob Prince (Pittsburgh Pirates broadcaster), saying “How sweet it is.” After that, he decided it would be better announcing only the East’s games. He became the “Voice of the Patriots,” a position he enjoyed until retiring in 2003.
After retiring, he worked for several years as a recruiter for Wilkes University, introducing students to the Wilkes Barre College. He was also an official timer for Delaware Valley College football games.
Mr. Jones and his wife also enjoyed traveling to many places. He truly loved anything to do with airplanes, reading and walking.
Golf was always a passion of his. He enjoyed his work for many years with the Philadelphia section of the Professional Golf Association. He was a tournament starter and official, making friends with many of the pros in and out of the area.
Mr. Jones was a member of the Doylestown United Methodist Church for 50 years where he was a former usher. He was also one of the team leaders and pitcher for the softball team for many years.
He was a member of the Doylestown Masonic Lodge 245 F& AM, the Coudersport Consistory for more than 50 years and Shriners International, LuLu Shriners, Plymouth Meeting. He was also a life member of the National Education Association.
Mr. Jones was very family oriented. He was happiest when his family was around him. He was a very outgoing and sociable man, greeting everyone with a big smile and a twinkle in his eyes. He will be sadly missed as a loving husband, father, uncle and grandfather.
In addition to his wife, surviving by a daughter, Jeri J. Lewis and husband Bob of New Britain; a son-in-law, Ed Boyskey of Doylestown; two granddaughters, Stephanie Lewis Spaid and husband Josh of Timberville, Va., and Valerie Lewis Arbogast and husband Scott of Harrisonburg, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his youngest daughter, Denise, by 13 days, passing away Jan. 23, 2010; and three brothers, John “Buck,” Duane and Ben Jones.
Friends and family are invited to a memorial service at noon Friday, Feb. 12, 2010, at Doylestown United Methodist Church, 320 E. Swamp Rd. Doylestown, where friends may call from 10 a.m. to noon.
Interment will be held privately.
