Way Back When Print E-mail

The Spirit is pleased to share with our readers vignettes of life in the 19th century as originally reported in past issues of the newspapers. These reproduced stories include their original headlines and spelling. Local Intelligence

Bangert’s Babies

Well, if this don’t beat all! It beats two pairs, anyhow — three of a kind. Three bouncing boys were born to Charles J. Bangert, editor of the Falls Creek Herald, last Monday morning. Shake, Charley! Bangert is a shrewd business man, and will turn the event to good account as an advertisement for the Herald. Three babies in the house of a country editor ought to be sufficient to make the most tardy of delinquents pay up.

And F. J. Gill has already hastened to assure us that Bangert has decided to leave the naming of the babies to be voted on through the columns of his paper, only advance paying subscribers being permitted to vote.

Surely every patriotic citizen of Clearfield and Jefferson counties will want to suggest names for these boys.It is a privilege that ought to be appreciated. We may be able to think of prettier names before the contest closes, but at present nothing more appropriate occurs to us than Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego.

Good Schools

When Professor Christie, of the Eastman Business College, Poughkeepsie, was here last week, he visited the Punxsutawney schools. He had visited a large number of schools in this and New York States, and he expressed himself as being very much pleased with our schools.

He said they were the best conducted, and altogether the best schools he had visited outside the larger cities. This was not only complimentary to Professor Allison, our principal, who is a very excellent gentleman, and a highly competent educator, but it spoke well for the entire corps of teachers.

He’s After You

This week Des Freas starts out to collect subscription due the Spirit.

He will approach you as gently as the zephyr that kisses the apple blossoms, because he wants you to pay up. If he were around paying money to people he would not need to be so zephyr-like. Have your money ready for him when he comes.

He is also authorized to receive and receipt for new subscriptions. If you knew just how much trouble and worry and expense we had been to recently, every man that owes the Spirit a dollar would rush to this office with it, and those who were not subscribers would hasten to put their names on the list.
