Council to business owners: Watch your signs Print E-mail

PUNXSUTAWNEY — If you own a business and have plans to place small signs about your business throughout town that are similar to political signs, Punxsutawney Borough Council members said the signs are illegal.  At Monday's council meeting, Roger Steele, council member, said there are businesses that are placing those kind of signs throughout the borough.

"Some businesses are placing trashy ‘For Sale' signs in the ground within the borough," Steele said. "Those signs detract from the community, and detract from the safety of our community. Sometimes, they shove the signs in the ground or nail them onto utility poles.

"Business signs that are placed in the ground are in violation of a Punxsy borough ordinance," Steele said. "The signs that are placed on the utility poles violate state laws."

Steele added that there is an illegal sign on a utility pole at the intersection of South Gilpin Street and West Mahoning Street that advertises the installation of steel roofs.

"The police can call the number on the sign to obtain the address of the business and send them the fine in the mail," Steele said.

Punxsy Borough Police Chief Tom Fedigan said they have contacted businesses who have placed illegal signs around the borough. Ben White, borough manager, said the borough has had problems with the ‘student painter' signs during the summer that were placed throughout town. Steele said that recently, there were signs that advertised a pizza business that were placed throughout the borough.

"Business owners need to know that the signs are illegal, and we need to keep them off the streets," Steele said.

In other business:

• Robert Reesman, public safety committee chairperson, said there was a discussion at the committee meeting concerning the placement of a safety sign on North Main Street.

"There have been numerous accidents in the area near the intersection of Route 36 and Route 436, and further north on North Main Street," Reesman said. "It is a very dangerous stretch of road, and a warning sign of some type could help warn motorists as they approach the area."

Fedigan said since Route 36 is a state highway, any sign that would be placed there would require approval from PennDOT. Council approved a motion to have Fedigan and White contact PennDOT to discuss what type of safety signs are available.

• Steele said while he was out over the weekend, he saw borough residents taking advantage of the warm weather and raking their leaves to the curb.

"I even saw one resident pull his car around to the front of his house and turn his headlights on so he could complete his leaf raking," Steele said.

White said this is the final week that public works employees will be removing leaves from the curb.

"Anyone who hasn't completed raking their leaves to the curb this week will have to place them in the special brown leaf bags and call for pickup beginning next week," White said.
