PUNXSUTAWNEY — Duane Miller, chairman of PRIDE, announced Friday the awarding of Façade Improvement Grants to four Punxsutawney businesses.
The grants are for improvements to the facade of the buildings.
The grants approved in this round of funding include signage for Joe's Drive-In and Roseman's Florist; an awning for Howard Hanna-Allemang Realty; and a door for Lia's Bridal.
"The work to be accomplished under these grants will improve the appearance of our community," said Miller, who is one of the owners of Miller Brothers Furniture.
PRIDE, in cooperation with the borough, has offered incentive grants for the past three years. Grants made in 2007 and 2008 have improved the appearance of the town.
Residents and visitors may have noticed the improvements to buildings and storefronts that have been painted, had new signage, or added decorative improvements.
The funds for the Façade Improvement Grants have been raised privately and are made possible by First Energy Foundation; S&T; Indiana First Bank; County National Bank; and Marion Center Bank.
All funds granted through the Façade Improvement Program are from local community investors and are reinvested in community improvements.
These investors have made it possible for PRIDE to provide the 50-percent matching grants to improve downtown property.
The amount awarded through the grants for 2009 is $2,859 with an estimated total value of improvements this year at $6,323.
Over the three years, PRIDE — through the Façade Improvement Program — has provided $14,659 in incentive money, which has resulted in improvements valued at $120,323 in Punxsutawney.
"This grassroots effort to improve the look of our businesses has made our commercial district a more attractive place to visit and shop and our community a nicer place to live," said Marlene Lellock, director of the Chamber of Commerce.
