Abmech Inc. of West Homestead is clearing out the leftover appliances and machines that were left behind in the buildings that are to be demolished on North Findley Street in favor of the new Area Transportation Authority terminal building. A survey was performed listing the many items that are to be removed as part of the environmental abatement contract. Pictured is a storage building that was used by the old Punxsy Beauty School. PUNXSUTAWNEY — Work began Monday by Abmech Inc. — of West Homestead — on the environmental abatement portion of the demolition of the buildings along North Findley Street.

Abmech was the low bidder with a base bid of $87,000, and the alternate bid — which takes into account unknown factors that could or could not happen — was $17,000, for a project total of $104,000.

The buildings in that block of North Findley are to be demolished to make way for the new Area Transportation Authority (ATA) terminal building.

The Abmech supervisor for the project (who wished to remain anonymous) said his workers are removing all of the old appliances and machinery that contain freon or asbestos.

Much of the adjoining buildings — including the former Punxsy Beauty School and the Spencer House — have been vacant for several years.

The Army Navy Club has moved to its new location, which formerly housed Goodwill and the Comet Market on Route 310 in the Elk Run section.

Once Abmech completes the environmental abatement, the demolition will proceed.

Portions of one building were damaged by a fire several years ago and were never renovated.

The demolition was awarded to Earthmovers of Kylertown, with a base bid of $97,402. Alternate No. 1 is $5,768; Alternate No. 2 is $3,267; Alternate No. 3 is $4,777; Alternate No. 4 is $4,574; Alternate No. 5 is $3,522, for a project total of $119,310.

Ben White, Punxsutawney borough manager, said at a previous council meeting that the demolition will take an estimated 60 to 90 days.

Punxsy Borough Council has been working with ATA for over four years to make this project a reality.

The abatement is expected to last several weeks.
