PUNXSUTAWNEY — Members of the Punxsutawney Borough Police and one officer in particular received recognition from PennDOT for participating in the Pennsylvania Aggressive Driving Enforcement and Education Project.
Chief Tom Fedigan said Officer Ryan Miller, along with the rest of the department, received recognition for their outstanding efforts.
"Not only did Ryan do an excellent job, but every officer will receive the recognition award from PennDOT for showing excellence in aggressive driving enforcement, I'm proud of all the guys," Fedigan said. "When PennDOT asked us to go out and do this special type of enforcement, we were happy to do so."
Fedigan said officers targeted problem areas for speeding throughout the borough.
"Speeding goes hand-in-hand with aggressive driving," he said. "Tailgating and running stop signs are all aggressive driving.
"We like to focus on speeding because we have a lot of areas in town that we receive complaints about," Fedigan said. "Indiana Hill is one area we targeted, not only coming down, but traveling up."
He said Route 436 and Route 119 between Sheetz and the borough line is another area where speeding is a concern.
"Ryan does a good job, but so do the other officers in the department," Fedigan said.
"We've only just begun," he added, noting that police will begin another wave of aggressive driving enforcement beginning July 1 and throughout summer.
Fedigan said police will begin the pedestrian wave enforcement within the next few days.
Miller said aggressive driving is the No. 1 safety threat in the United States.
"I just want to thank PennDOT for choosing our department for the award," he said. "It wasn't just me; it was all the other officers in the department who also apprehended speeders and aggressive drivers."
Brookville Borough Police and Officer Scott Ishman also received recognition from PennDOT for aggressive driving enforcement.
