PUNXSUTAWNEY — After much delay, the final results of the May 19 primary election have been tallied and released by the Jefferson County Board of Elections.

Karen Lupone, Jefferson County chief clerk, said the delay was due to the large number of write-in votes tallied especially in the Punxs-utawney Area School Board races, which caused emo-tions to run high foll-owing the board's decision to close Mary A. Wilson Elementary School.

Lupone said the vote to close the school came after the deadline to circulate and turn in petitions to get on the spring primary ballot.

The Punxsy school board will see some new faces on the ballot for the general election Tuesday, Nov. 3.

• In Punxsy Region II — which includes Oliver and Ringgold Townships, Timblin and Worthville — write-in candidate Lesa Conner defeated incumbent Kirby J. Starr, school board president, 98 to 80 write-ins on the Republican ballot. She also received 31 write-ins on the Democratic ballot, while Starr did not cross-file and appeared only on the Republican ballot.

He was among six board members who voted to  close Mary A.

• In Punxsy Region VI — which includes Punxsutawney Precinct 2 (Mary A. Wilson Elementary School is located in this district) — challenger, Roberta M. Dinsmore, defeated incumbent Ron Voris 91 to 76 on the Republican ballot, and 70 to 25 on the Democratic ballot.

Voris also voted to close Mary A., and Dinsmore's name was on the primary ballot.

• In Punxsy Region III — which includes McCalmont and Young Townships — incumbent Gary Conrad defeated challenger Michele C. Neal with 134 to her 67 write-ins on the Republican ballot, and 119 to 67 votes on the Democratic ballot.

• In Punxsy Region IV — which includes Punxsutawney Precinct 3 — incumbent Francis J. Molinaro was unopposed on the ballot and received 69 write-ins on the Republican ballot, and 71 write-ins on the Democratic ballot.

• In Punxsy Region V — which includes Punxsutawney Precinct 2 — there was no declared candidate.

Although incumbent Bob Pascuzzo did not file to be on the ballot, he ran a write-in campaign and garnered a combined total of 17 write-ins on the Republican ballot. He did not claim any write-ins on the Democratic ballot.

All winners will appear on the November ballot.

In Punxsutawney Borough Council races, candidates run at-large:

• On the Republican ballot, incumbent Larry Chenoga collected the most write-ins with 261 votes; incumbent council President Susan Glessner received 255 write-ins; and incumbent William H. Spencer received 243 write-ins.

All three will appear on the November ballot.

• On the Democratic ballot, Michele P. Lorenzo was unopposed and received 211 write-ins. Incumbent write-in Michael Porada claimed 29 write-ins, and both will appear on the November ballot.

• Mayor James Wehrle ran unopposed on the Republican ballot and received 347 write-ins.

There was no declared Democratic candidate.
