PUNXSUTAWNEY — In the interest of improved safety and overall appearance of the Punxsutawney Memorial Library, the Board of Trustees and the Friends of the Library have undertaken an extensive project to provide new floor covering throughout the facility.
The estimated cost of the renovations is $50,000, for which partial funding has been provided.
The Friends group has already contributed $15,000, and will make an additional donation in the near future. The library has allocated another $10,000.
An appeal to the public to help underwrite the remainder of the cost is now underway.
Noting that the library is an exceptionally busy place where hundreds of people stop each week for information and entertainment, the trustees pointed out that the wear and tear on the interior is most evident in the present carpeting. It shows the deterioration of years of foot traffic. Embedded soil marks, snags, tears and discoloration indicate that new floor covering is a must.
With the state already indicating there will be additional substantial reductions to the library's general funding, the trustees realize that tough economic times are confronting everyone.
Yet, they also know that the people of this area have a reputation for generously "coming through" for worthwhile projects, such as the carpeting of the library.
As Francis J. Molinaro, president of the board, said, "We will appreciate everyone's gift, regardless of size, in helping to make the Punxsutawney Memorial Library a well-maintained, safe and attractive facility we can all be proud of. Contributions to the library are building blocks for the future."
