BROOKVILLE — Voters in Pennsylvania are headed to the polls for the spring primary election today.
Today's primary features a large slate of local candidates for county row offices, mayor, school board directors and borough council seats.
Two members of the Punxsutawney Area School Board are facing challenges for their seats, while a new face seeks a position on Punxsutawney Borough Council.
In the Punxsutawney Area School District, incumbent Gary L. Conrad, who cross-filed as a Democrat/Republican, faces a challenge for his seat from Michele C. Neal, who also cross-filed.
In another race for a Punxsy school board seat, Roberta M. Dinsmore is challenging incumbent Ronald E. Voris, who is the current board vice-president. Both cross-filed for the Region VI seat.
Also, current board president Kirby Starr (R) is unopposed in Region II on the ballot, but Sue Stiver and Lesa Connor are running as write-ins for Starr's seat.
Francis J. Molinaro (D/R) is unopposed in Region IV.
Robert Pascuzzo, incumbent board member, is running as a write-in for his seat in Region V, which no one filed for. All board seats are four-year terms.
In the Borough of Punxsutawney, four incumbent council members — current President Susan Glessner and council members Larry Chenoga and William H. Spencer, all Republicans — seek to retain their four-year seats, along with Mike Porada — a Democrat — who is running as a write in. Michele P. Lorenzo seeks a seat on council as a Democrat, as well.
Mayor James P. Wehrle is seeking re-election and is unopposed, while Daniel K. Leeman (D) seeks the six-year office of Punxsutawney I constable.
Incumbent Tax Collector, Susan L. Mitchell (R) seeks re-election, while two Democrats, Michael Benninger and Paul J. Pape, seek the post of Punxsutawney II and Punxsutawney III constable.
Ruth Grube, filed as a Republican, seeks the Punxsutawney judge of election post.
Two Democrats seeking the post of Punxsutawney III inspector of election are Joan F. Phillips and Aggie I. Ott.
In county row offices:
Incumbent Republican Jefferson County Treasurer James "Moon" VanSteenberg, Corsica, is being challenged by Republican Frank M. Snyder, Reynoldsville.
• Incumbent Coroner Bernard P. Snyder, Reynoldsville (R), will run unopposed, while Gregory K. Furlong, Summerville (D), will also run for the Coroner's seat unopposed, though on the Democratic side.
• Incumbent District Attorney Jeffrey D. Burkett, Brookville (R), is unopposed in his bid for re-election.
• Incumbent Jury Commissioner Mabel "Sis" Dunkle, Brookville (R), will run for the Jury Commissioner's seat unopposed in the Republican party, while her likely challenger in November, Frances M. Tattersall, Brookville (D), will run unopposed on the Democratic side.
• Incumbent Prothonotary Tonya M.Geist, Summerville (R), is unopposed.
• District Judge David B. Inzana, Brockway (D/R), is unopposed.
In other regions around Punxsutawney:
Big Run — Both Nick J. Lantz and John L. Smeal, both Democrats, seek four-year terms on council, while incumbent Mayor Joseph L. Buterbaugh (R) is running unopposed.
Laura L. Lantz (D) seeks the four-year office of tax collector, while Rose A. Buterbaugh (R) seeks the post of judge of election, and Virginia M. Maines (R) seeks the office of inspector of election.
Bell Township — Doug Horne Sr. (D) and Jeff Kromer (R) seek four-year seats on the Board of Supervisors, while Leroy Anthony and James Mellen, both Republicans, seek six-year terms.
Also seeking six-year terms are Henry A. Braunns (R) as constable and Kenneth E. Stoddard (R) for tax collector.
Henderson Township — Loretta C. Shepler (R) seeks a four-year term as inspector of election, while Harold Pifer ((R) seeks a six-year term as supervisor, and Brenda J. Weber (D) seeks a four-year term as tax collector.
Knox Township — Both James D. Edmonds and Gary E. Knapp, both Republicans, seek six-year offices as supervisor, while Darla G. Brosius (R) seeks a four-year term as tax collector.
McCalmont Township — Douglas E. Scott (D) seeks a six-year term as constable; Julia Ann Uplinger (D) seeks a four-year term as inspector of election; and James F. Scarantine (D) seeks a four-year term as supervisor.
Leslie Pennington (D) seeks a four-year term as tax collector.
Oliver Township — Both Robert J. Adams and David M. Bowers, both Republicans, seek six-year terms as constable, while Agnes Shaffer ((R) seeks a four-year term as inspector of election.
Cheri E. Shaffer (R) seeks a four-year seat as judge of election, and Matthew Enterline (R) seeks a six-year term as supervisor.
Perry Township — Kimberly McMonagle (R) and Helen R. Wolfe (D) seek four-year terms as inspector of election, while Vivian D. Smith (R) seeks a four-year term as tax collector, and Patricia A. Hinderliter (R) seeks a four-year term as judge of election.
Young Township — Peter Betts (D), Paul "Pat" O. Hanley (D), Joe R. Powell (R) and Ronald Strano (D) are all seeking six-year terms as supervisors, while Rosalie A. Astorino (D) seeks a six-year term as auditor, and Rose Handyside (R) seeks a four-year term.
Lawrence Porada (D) seeks a six-year term as constable, and two Democrats, Carole R. Schultz and Jacquelyn Porada seek four-year terms as inspector of elections.
Thomas Gigliotti (D) seeks a four-year term as judge of election, and Ron Walker (R) seeks a four-year term as tax collector.
The polls are open today from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
