HYDE -- A tough season on offense became worse Wednesday night for the Punxsy girls' basketball team.
The Lady Chucks made just nine field goals during a 34-27 loss in Clearfield — Punxsy's first loss on the Lady Bisons' court during eighth-year head coach Randy Reitz's tenure.
The Lady Chucks (5-10, 3-4) fell into a third-place tie with the Lady Bisons (5-8, 3-4), as Punxsy scored just 17 points during the final three quarters after a 10-point first stanza.
Punxsy shot 9-of-43 from the field -- just 21 percent.
"It's not that we didn't put forth the effort because we did. We just had a bad shooting night," Reitz said. "The kids worked hard, but we just couldn't convert on the offense end with our shots."
Jenna Reitz led the Lady Chucks with nine points -- all three-pointers -- eight steals and four assists.
Allie Miller followed with five points -- all from the free-throw line on six attempts -- and six rebounds.
Brittany Baker and Megan McCully each connected on two baskets for four points, Lauren Janocha had two markers and six rebounds, and Amber Fye nailed a three-pointer after sitting out Saturday and Monday's varsity games after injuring her leg during Saturday's JV contest.
Miller, who scored a game-high 20 points during Punxsy's 47-39 victory Monday against Penn Cambria, was limited to zero field goals.
"We played very well on the defensive end and we eliminated turnovers, but had a very poor night shooting," Reitz said. "Their size hurt us a little bit, and we couldn't get it to go through the hoop."
Punxsy will attempt to complete a season sweep of DuBois (2-11, 1-6) Saturday afternoon. The Lady Beavers dropped an overtime affair against Brookville Wednesday, 45-39.
"We just have to keep working on our shooting at practice and get our confidence back," Reitz said.
