PUNXSUTAWNEY -- Punxsy came out of the gates slowly Thursday night after getting two huge wins Monday and Tuesday, but though Thursday's start wasn't overpowering, the end resulted in the Lady Chucks' 10th sweep of the season.
Punxsy (10-0) still won 25-14, 25-13 and 25-13, even when head coach Lisa Good expected a bit of a letdown.
"They played well Monday and Tuesday ... I'm dragging, so I can imagine that they're dragging. It's just the beast of the schedule," she said. "Even when you're playing kind of sloppy and not quite as crisp as you'd like to play, and still win, then you can't complain."
The Lady Chucks were without injured senior Tabi Bowers. Good decided that Thursday's match was a good time to rest Bowers, considering she'll be part of the Homecoming Queen's Court at tonight's football game.
Having Bowers back and healthy in the upcoming weeks will be vital, as the Lady Chucks face two talented teams -- Altoona Oct. 13 and Clarion Oct. 21. The Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches' Association ranks Clarion as the No. 1 Class A team in the state.
"We knew we didn't really need her tonight. She's going to get a nice long rest," Good said. "We're going to need a full, healthy team for the Clarion's and the Altoona's down the road."
Sophomore Tawnee Bowers earned the start in Tabi Bowers' place, and finished the game with seven digs. Others that filled in for Tabi Bowers off the bench were Taylor Powell (six service points, four aces, two kills, four digs), Shawnna Crago (two kills) and Mo Blose (four digs.
"Everybody played well, as far as the subs go," Good said. "They stepped it up and did well."
The Lady Chucks trailed 8-5 early during Game 1, but that changed in a flash. Led by a 20-6 run, Punxsy took a 1-0 lead after Holly Setree aced the final point.
Punxsy's advantage was just 7-6 and 14-10 in the second game before an 11-3 run made it 2-0 Lady Chucks.
Game 3 wasn't in question for long, as Punxsy led 6-0 and 11-2. After Clearfield came back to make it 19-13, the home team scored the final six points to complete the sweep.
Lex Bianco showed off her height by recording 10 kills and four blocks. Her 10 kills came off 20 hit attempts, thus creating a 50 percent kill ratio. Good said that anything over 35 percent is pretty good.
Corri Snyder led the team with 16 set assists, 13 service points and six aces. She also had six digs.
Brittany Aaron secured a team-best 11 digs, and Rachel Humble had nine set assists.
Other high stat totals came from Punxsy's Hannah Neal (10 service points, four aces, four kills, seven digs), Sarah Fugate (five digs), Setree (10 service points, three aces, four kills, eight digs) and Aaron (five service points, two aces).
The JV team's undefeated season reached double-digits following a 25-12 and 25-18 triumph over the Lady Bisons.
Hannah Giavedoni led the offense with seven service aces, while Blose and Crago ended up with high kills -- three.
Kristen Fedder (five set assists) and Cassie Cook (three) split the setting duties, while Cook and Kayla Knox had three aces apiece.
Both Punxsy squads play twice next week -- Tuesday at home against Brockway and Thursday at DuBois -- before the JV girls compete at the ECC tourney Saturday.
