SYKESVILLE -- Randy Davis, executive director of the Jefferson County Area Agency on Aging, reported at Tuesday's county commission meeting that the Sykesville Senior Center -- located in the Jefferson County Housing Authority complex -- will close effective July 3.
"Due to economic realities and no additional funding in our budget, we will be discontinuing the senior center operations in Sykesville," he said. "We are encouraging all consumers and participants to attend events at The Foundry senior center in Reynoldsville.
"Donna Price is the center director and has a full schedule of events ready to go for folks," he said.
Davis said if transportation is an issue, the agency make arrangements with the Area Transportation Authority to transport people from Sykesville to Reynoldsville. The Agency on Aging will pay for the cost of transportation.
Davis said the Sykesville building is owned by the Jefferson County Housing Authority, and Executive Director Sandy McGuire is planning a community meeting at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 1, at the Sykesville center.
"The meeting is for the community to get together and listen to what they want to see happen with the center," Davis said. "Much of the equipment is going to be left there -- the kitchen equipment along with the furniture. It will still be available for the community of Sykesville to use as a social gathering place."
Anyone who would like more information should call Price at The Foundry at 653-2522.
The Agency on Aging also has senior centers in Punxsutawney, Brookville and Brockway.
