PUNXSUTAWNEY -- With a 4-4 vote that caused the motion to fail, Monday, the Punxsutawney Area School Board did not accept KTH Architects’ bid for the high school paving project.
After hearing that the project would cost $92,449.65, various board members questioned the option of moving forward with the project.
Board member Gary Conrad wondered how necessary paving the gravel lot would be.
“With our enrollment declining, do we really need a new parking space?” he said. “We already have ample parking here. I am totally against this. Paving (the parking lot) professionally, I think, isn’t needed.”
Board member Jack White suggested using a lot located across North Findley street -- a lot that on the same side of the road as the Pennsylvania State Police Troop C barracks and currently used to park school buses -- to expand student parking.
“We could lease the land and save ourselves a whole bunch of money,” he said. “We could put a crossing guard on the road (that separates the lot from the school) if you are worried about the kids crossing the street.”
“We can’t have those kids crossing the main road every day,” board President Kirby Starr responded. “Personally, I don’t think that would be the best idea in the world.”
In other business, the board:
• Approved the hiring of Michael Guidash as the assistant principal at the high school at a rate of $63,560 annually as of July 1.
Guidash, a Punxsy native, thanked the board at Monday’s meeting.
“I wanted to come and thank you (the board) for this opportunity to let me finally come home,” he said. “I look forward to working with you all.”
• Approved one new bus stop, one additional bus run and special needs requests made by Director of Transportation Cheryl Repik.
• Approved the hiring of Michael Carlson as the eighth-grade assistant girls’ basketball coach.
• Approved the hiring of Erin Bowser at the middle school to fill a part-time cleaning position, working four hours per day, and Melissa Weaver at Parkview to fill a part-time cleaning position, working four 1/2-hours per day. |
