SYKESVILLE -- The weather Sunday was perfect for running and walking in the 29th Annual Run/Walk For Someone Special in Sykesville. Pat Mowrey, chairman, of the annual event, said they were blessed with a gorgeous day Sunday.
"All the money from the Run/Walk goes to the Jefferson County Retarded Citizens Association (JCARC)," Mowrey said. "We have a camp called Camp Friendship, located outside of Reynoldsville off Route 322. We have a tremendous amount of activities that have been held in these 29 years at the camp -- the Run/Walk funded all of them."
This year, the Run/Walk raised $32,425, eclipsing last year when they raised $31,432.
The total number of runners for this year's event totaled 172.
The top money collectors for groups were:
1st -- Life Skills Class at DuBois High School -- $927.
2nd -- Punxsutawney Curves -- $379.
3rd -- DuBois Wellness DuBois School District -- $318.
The top money collectors for elementary schools were:
• Punxsutawney Area School District -- $4,973.
• DuBois Area School District -- $916.
JCARC Adult Recreation Program -- $6,602.
Mowrey said each participant collects the money before the race and pledges so much per mile.
"Some participants bring $2 and some bring $200," Mowrey said. "I'm amazed at how well we did, because the economy is so tough right now. We are very, very, grateful for what we received this year and for every year."
