Defense carries Lady Chucks to big win on road Print E-mail

CLEARFIELD -- Emily Thompson scored 17 points, and the Lady Chucks didn’t allow more than seven points in any quarter of a 41-23 rout of the Lady Bisons in Clearfield Wednesday night. “We did a very nice job on defense,” Punxsy head coach Randy Reitz said. “We communicated, we checked out, and we deflected a lot of balls, whether it was in the post or out in the perimeter.
“We just played with a lot of intensity tonight,” he said. “We were mentally quick.”
Punxsy controlled the game from start to finish, as it took a 12-4 first-quarter lead before each team scored five in the second stanza. In the second half, the Lady Chucks outscored the Lady Bisons 24-14.
Punxsy, which has had a few games of 20 turnovers or more, had just nine Wednesday.
“Offensively, the girls were very patient,” Reitz said. “They did a very good job of eliminating the turnovers. They did a very good job in the half-court offense and the full-court zone press that Clearfield applied.”
Thompson nailed three three-pointers and was a perfect 2-for-2 from the free-throw line while scoring 17 markers. She followed with five rebounds and three steals.
“They keyed on Jube (Parise), and that left Emily open,” Reitz said. “The girls did a nice job of getting her the ball, and she did a nice job of finishing, whether it was a jump shot or going to the hoop tonight.”
While the Lady Bisons focused on covering hot-shooting Parise, she still made two three-pointers for six points. Five other Punxsy girls scored, as Amanda Toven had six points, nine rebounds and three steals; Allie Miller scored four points; Jenna Reitz put in two points and ripped three steals; and Megan McCully came off the bench for four points.
Clearfield didn’t have any girls in double-figures, and were led by Sarah Kovalick, who had seven points.
The Lady Chucks not only improved to 7-11 on the season and 4-4 in the D9 League, but avenged a Dec. 7 loss at home to Clearfield.
Next up for Punxsy is a home game against Bradford Friday night.
