Users must register for SchoolReach for new school year

November 17, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Parents and guardians who wish to continue to receive information about school delays and cancelations must register for the program again, even if they did so last year.

Monday, Superintendent Dr. Keith Wolfe told the school board while the district will again use the SchoolReach telephone notification system, even those who registered last year must register again.

When board member Bob Pascuzzo asked why, Wolfe said all registrations from the 2010-11 school year will be purged from the system.

Board President Gary Conrad also said the system must be purged because some people’s cell numbers might change, and those of students who signed up but graduated or are not enrolled in the district remain in the system.

“It’s the same thing as last year,” Wolfe added, noting also that as families move in the district, phone numbers also change.

According to the district’s Web site, SchoolReach is used for school delay/closing notifications, as well as for attendance and other important notification events.

Because of the system purge, it is important to complete the registration survey in order to receive notification for the 2011-12 school year. All information and contact numbers are strictly secure and confidential and are used only for the purposes described.

When used, the service will call all phone numbers in the selected contact lists and will deliver a voice or text message from a school administrator.

Users on the Verizon system will receive only text messages.

Parents, students and staff should not rely on SchoolReach as the only means of notification about school closings and delays, as these types of notifications will also be made through local television and radio stations, Comcast Channel 18, and the district Web page.

To renew a registration for SchoolReach, or to register for the first time, go to the district’s Web page at http://www.punxsy.k12.pa.us.
