DUBOIS — Punxsy's seventh- and eighth-grade basketball teams played well on both sides of the ball again, using solid defense and consistent scoring from a variety of players to earn a pair of wins against the Lady Beavers in DuBois Monday afternoon.

In the eighth-grade game, Punxsy led 21-10 after three quarters and held off a late rally by DuBois to win 24-17.

"The girls played really well," Punxsy head coach Mike Carlson said after the game. "Our man-to-man defense was the best it's been all season."

Emma White led all scorers with 10 points for the Lady Chucks (9-5), including four free throws.

Hope Bridge added seven points, and Ivy Ferko scored five of her own. Claire Smith chipped in with two to finish the scoring for Punxsy.

Although Carlson was pleased with his entire team's effort, he highlighted a few players' play in particular.

"Emma White was everywhere tonight," he said. "She trapped the ball well and, along with Ivy Ferko, made great decisions running the offense."

The seventh-graders led by just one point after the first quarter, 9-8, but shut out the Lady Beavers in both the second and fourth quarters en route to a 21-12 victory.

"What a gritty defensive performance this team demonstrated and put forth against DuBois for four quarters today," Punxsy head coach Darrin Kriebel said. "I'm extremely happy for the girls, because with the busy week of games they have, it's the jump-start to the week that they definitely needed, especially from a confidence standpoint and for a momentum booster."

Alli Lunger led the way in the scoring department with 10 points for Punxsy (10-5).

Devon Dubensky added five points to the tally, and Morgan VanLeer, Alli Ishman and Kaitlyn Ray each scored two points to wrap up Punxsy's scoring.

It was the defense that Kriebel saw that impressed him the most, though.

"This group continues to take a lot of pride in stopping teams defensively, and this game was no exception," Kriebel said.

Punxsy hopes to keep the momentum rolling into the rest of this busy week — one that will see four games over an eight-day span for the Lady Chucks.

Punxsy will continue the week when it hosts the Lady Raiders of Brookville at 4 p.m. Wednesday. The eighth-grade squad hopes to avenge a 33-29 loss to Brookville early in the season.

Punxsy wraps up the week Friday and Monday with a pair of away games at Bradford and Hollidaysburg, respectively.
